Band of the Week: The Wrenfields Alt-country
group is a rising star
 By

News

DEARBORN
-- With influences such as the Jayhawks and Wilco, and comparisons
to bands such as the Allman Brothers and Blues Traveler, the Wrenfields
are well on their way to becoming one of Detroit's rising
alternative-country stars. Since forming two years
ago, the sextet has received accolades from a handful of local and
national publications and Web sites. During the spring, the Wrenfields
took home three Detroit Music Awards in the country-music category. The
group scored an award for Outstanding Country Recording for its new CD,
"21st Century Pioneer," Outstanding Country Group and Outstanding
Country Vocalist, which went to member Noreen Novrocki.
This season, the band plans to play at two of the
area's biggest summer festivals: the 2002 Comerica TasteFest next week
in Detroit's New Center and the Chrysler Arts, Beats and Eats in Pontiac
during Labor Day weekend. The Wrenfields also will jam at the Dearborn
Homecoming Weekend Aug. 2 and 3 at the New Place Lounge in Dearborn.
Name: The Wrenfields
Line-up: David Berriman, keyboards; Frank
Budd, bass guitar, harmonica; Tom Morgan, guitars; Noreen Novrocki, lead
vocals, percussion; Matt O'Bryan, guitars, e-bow and vocals; John Pyro,
lead vocals, drums. Sound: With a new album
that can be described as fun Americana music, you can really tell that
the band members enjoy making their music. Instruments, such as acoustic
guitars, steel pedal guitars, and harmonicas, give the Wrenfields a
rootsy and eclectic vibe. Releases: "21st
Century Pioneer," CD (2001, independent).
Next: The Wrenfields will be the first act
at TasteFest on the Pure Detroit/Motor Stage. The group will kick it off
at noon on Wednesday. The stage is located at Second Avenue and Lothrop
Street. Call (313) 927-1101 or visit http://www.tastefest.com/ At the
end of the summer, the Wrenfields are slotted to perform at 1 p.m. Sept.
2 on the Dodge Americana Stage during the Arts, Beats and Eats festival.
